The National Citizens Scheme is an optional programme for teenagers that helps to prepare them for life in the adult world via a series of workshops and projects. Week one is a teambuilding week and I have just spent the week at Condover Hall working on this phase of the scheme with Class Adventure. My group were from Liverpool and dispelled many of the lazy stereotypes associated with young people from the inner cities. The team had not meant one another prior to beginning the scheme and so the focus was on engaging them in activities that would enable them to work as a team, improve their communication and leadership skills and, hopefully, have plenty of fun.
Over the five days we undertook a wide range of activities including: High ropes, watersports, puzzle solving, archery, orienteering, climbing, laser maze and abseiling. On each day the activities were followed by a review and debrief which allowed the young people to assess the skills they’d used and think about how they might be able to use them in “real life”. Overall, it was a really enjoyable week of work and I wish them all the very best for their future endeavors.
